Red Lids with Rimmel and Maybelline

Rimmel caused quite a stir in the beauty blogger world with the release of their Glam'eyes HD 5-Colour Eye Shadow in Brixton Brown. Rumoured to be a dupe for the much higher priced Charlotte Tilbury Dolce Vita palette it was one I couldn't pass up. The addition of a gorgeous cranberry/red colour has seen it slot straight in to my autumn makeup bag and it quickly made it into my favourites. But Rimmel haven't been the only ones to release a brown-red combo palette on the highstreet, on a perusal of Priceline during their 40% off sale (see the damage done here) I spotted the Expert Eye Designer Chocolates palette by Maybelline and it was quickly added to the basket. A few weeks down the track and I'm ready to compare the pair, those deciding which one to add to your makeup draw listen up.

Packaging wise there's not much difference here. Both accompanied with the usual foam applicator (does anybody even use those things?!), black packaging and clear lids. The Rimmel offering is slightly more compact but neither are particularly chunky. Travel friendly? Check. Inside you're faced with 4 shades in the Maybelline offering and 5 from Rimmel. For those wanting the most bang for your buck, Maybelline actually has the most product (4.8g compared to 3.8g if you really wanted to know!).

When talking shades Maybelline has named there's after their recommended use; a pearly white base, shimmery champagne brown lid, a slightly purpley rose gold crease and medium matte brown liner. Rimmel offers up a peachy champagne, a matte brown (slightly, slightly lighter than Maybelline's), dark matte brown, matte black/brown and the star of the show, the centre shimmery red (think Mac's cranberry).

Pigmentation wise both perform fairly well. Rimmel's weak point is their lighter matte brown shade, it's just a little too chalky and slightly lacking in pigmentation. The cranberry shade has amazing pigmentation though and can be built up to a foil-like finish or blended in for a subtle red shimmer. The Maybelline colours aren't quite so bold but they're still nicely pigmented, think of it as Rimmel's more tame sister. I quite like that they've opted for more muted shades as the formulas are fairly shimmery so it stops things looking too OTT.

I've found the Rimmel offering is geared more towards a matte eye with some statement red shimmer while the Maybelline offering is great for adding a hint of colour on a daily basis. My advice? If you're looking for a highstreet Mac Cranberry-esque colour, go the Rimmel. If you're wanting a natural every day palette go the Maybelline. Don't be afraid to try something a little different, I've actually loved experimenting with a red eye.
