The Hormonal Breakout Edit

To those who are regulars around these parts, it's nothing new to know that I suffer from pretty problematic skin. Like many other girls I seem to particularly struggle around that time of the month. It's usually this type if hormonal breakouts that leave those horrid scares behind that stick around all month (or more), just in time for a whole heap more to pop up.  Being the self-confessed skincare junkie that I am, I of course have a certain group of products I reach for whenever these annoying hormones come out to play. Here's the masks and treatments that I've found to help get me through hormone hell, too dramatic?

One of the most annoying occurrences for me during that time of the month is those horrid, under the skin, sore, never-come-to-a-head type blemishes. Usually popping up along my jaw line, boy do they hurt and they are such a nuisance to get rid of. For these bad boys I always reach for my Aesop Chamomile Concentrate Anti-Blemish Mask as I find that a blob of this applied directly to the sore patch and left for 10-15 minutes is perfect to clear up the issue. The next morning any soreness is significantly reduced as is redness. If it's a really persistent one I'll reapply a second night but it usually only takes one go.

If the problem is a large area of congestion rather than single, horrible spots, I reach for Origin's Clear Improvements mask. A charcoal mask which draws impurities to the surface. One that gives you that I-can't-smile face once dried but definitely worth it. As it leaves my skin feeling quite tight, I like the follow up with Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey mask. A moisturising mask which calms the skin whilst also stopping any future breakouts with it's antibacterial properties. Here's my full post with all the deets.

Masks aside there's also some other products I employ when my skin's suffering. Clarins Exfoliating Toner to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells and Pai's Bioregenerate Rosehip Oil. A firm favourite of mine not only for how hydrated it makes my skin feel but also in the hope that it will help clear up my scar issues. I don't think anything can work miraculously overnight on scarring but I think using something like rosehip oil is important in the long term.

Do you suffer from horrible skin at that time of the month? What are your most reached for products?

  1. Brilliant post! I also suffer from 'monthly' breakouts and love the origins mask. I've recently discovered Mario Badescu's acne range which is brilliant for beating spots xx

  2. Great post, I love the Origins clear improvement mask, and the antipodes Manuka honey, having a debate at the moment wether to try the parsley seed mask or this one as this one claims to be more anti blemish I think it's what my skin will need post Christmas :D xx

  3. Ahhhh I'm so glad I found this! I've been suffering from breakouts lately (source unknown) and needed to try a few new products. And around that time of the month it's just been getting worse.

Thanks for this, can't wait to buy and try them!
