Highstreet Mascara Round Up

I realised I have quite a few highstreet/drugstore mascaras kicking around in my make up drawers so thought I'd do a little round up of my thoughts on all of them. The prices for these range from just $3 (MUA Extreme Volume Mascara) to $23 (Maxfactor Masterpiece High Definition Mascara). Hopefully you find this post helpful, if you do let me know and I'll do some more highstreet/drugstore round up style posts.

So starting with the cheapest first, MUA's Extreme Volume Mascara. RRP is just £2 ($3) so this one if definitely a bargain. I've got mine in the shade Black/Brown however it stills comes out quite dark. I like how this mascara has a bristle brush as opposed to plastic and it is large. I find larger, bristled brushes are best for creating volume and I do prefer bristles over plastic. This isn't clumpy, it's easy to apply and for just £2 it's hard to go wrong with this one.

Next is Rimmel's Extra Wow Lash Mascara with an RRP of $12.95. I didn't really get on with this mascara. It did have proper bristles which I usually like but I found it tricky to apply and it clumped very easily. I really hate clumps in my mascara so I'm not really a fan of this one. I found it quite messy to apply but am not entirely sure why. It's advertised to have an 'oversized volume building brush' but it's smaller than the MUA one so don't think the size was my issue. Maybe it was the shape? Either way, I wasn't a fan. I've got mine in the shade 003 Extreme Black.

Another one by Rimmel aimed at building volume is ScandalEyes. I actually really like this mascara! It has a massive wand which I absolutely love, I find it so easy to apply thi, even when I'm rushing. It doesn't clump, it only needs one coat and it really enhances my lashes nicely. No complaints about this one. Of the two Rimmel ones, this one is a bit more expensive (RRP $16.95) but I think it's worth it for a mascara that is so much better!

(Quick note, it does look a little clumpy in this picture but I think that's because when I was taking these pictures, it was the last one I took and there was a bit of make up remover residue still on my lashes)

Now onto MaxFactor's MasterPiece High Definition Mascara. This ones obviously aimed at creating a different look to the previous ones, defining rather than volumising. It has a very small, plastic brush which when I first saw, my heart sank. I usually don't like these kinds of brushes, however I think this one may have won me over. This mascara is absolutely clump free, and really nicely defines the lashes, just like it says on the packet. This is a nice every day mascara as it isn't too in your face and looks quite natural. Although this one is the most expensive of the lot (RRP $23.95!) it is a really nice mascara. If you're looking for definition rather than volume and find big brushes hard to work with, I'd definitely recommend checking this one out.

Finally, another one by MaxFactor; Xperience Volumising Mascara. I found it strange that this mascara was nearly identical to the other MaxFactor one. Although both aimed at acheiving different looks, the had almost exactly the same thin, straight brush and had pretty much the same result. I wouldn't recommend this one if you're looking for something to give you volume, as quite honestly, this one didn't. It's quite nice for defining, but I was still disappointed as that's not really what it was described as. If you're looking for volume, you'd be much better off with the Rimmel ScandalEyes- it's cheaper too!

So to sum up, if you want something cheap and cheerful that won't break the bank, try out MUA's mascara. It's surprisingly nice! If you want volume go Rimmel's ScandalEyes and if you love yourself some definition, try Maxfactor's High Definition. Let me know if there's any great highstreet mascara's I'm missing from my collection and I hope you all found this helpful!

  5. Hiya:) I've never used the orange Rimmel Scandaleyes but I highly recommend using the green one with the Lycra flex. It's REALLY good and I've been using it everyday for the passed month or so.
